Lifes Magic

The wonderful filly who inspired my username has died. A two time champion/Eclipse award winner, Life's Magic passed away peacefully at Trackside Farm in Kentucky on August 21, 2007. She was 26 years old.

As a 2-year-old in 1983, Life's Magic won the prestigious Oak Leaf Stakes. The following year, her career really took off. She won the Beldame, Mother Goose, and Alabama Stakes, all grade 1 events and finished 2nd in the Breeder's Cup Distaff. These accomplishments earned her the Eclipse award as Champion 3-Year-Old Filly of 1984.

In 1985, she capped her season and her career by winning the Breeder's Cup Distaff by 6 1/4 lengths, beating her stablemate Lady's Secret, who would go on to be the 1986 Horse of the Year. She was rewarded with a 2nd Eclipse, this time as Champion Older Female.

Life's Magic also had an excellent record against the best males in the country. While she didn't hit the board in the Kentucky Derby or Santa Anita Handicap, she did finish 2nd in the Brooklyn Handicap and Norfolk Stakes, and 3rd in the Hollywood Futurity, again all grade 1 races, the highest level of race in the nation. She retired with 8 wins and $2,255,218 in earnings. Life's Magic was proud Mom to 7 winners, including Simon Pure, who finished 3rd in the 2007 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga.

To quote her trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, "I've had some great fillies, and she stands right there with the best."

Ladys Secret Info

image

Some info about one of the great fillies/mares of all time:

Lady's Secret was a daughter of 1973 Triple Crown champion Secretariat and the mare Great Lady M.

After successful campaigns at ages 2 and 3, Lady's Secret dominated the American racing scene as a 4 year old in 1986. She defeated the country's best male horses four times. In this championship season, she won 10 of her 15 starts, all of them graded stakes victories. Eight of those wins were in Grade 1 races, the highest level of race in the nation. No horse had won this many graded stakes races in one season since races first became graded back in 1973.

A small, grey horse weighing no more than 900 pounds, Lady's Secret had great speed, doing her best running on the lead. She also possessed true grit, heart, and determination. These qualities earned her the nickname "The Iron Lady." She was the first female horse to win the historic Whitney Handicap at Saratoga Racecourse since 1948 and finished her outstanding 1986 with a resounding victory in the Breeder's Cup Distaff at Santa Anita Park.

Her phenomenal record in 1986 earned her two Eclipse awards, outstanding Older Female and the coveted Horse of the Year title, an honor rarely given to fillies & mares.

Lady's Secret was retired in 1989 at age 5 with lifetime earnings of $3,021,325. She was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1992. The Blood Horse magazine ranks her #76 on their list of the top 100 US Thoroughbred Champions of the 20th Century.

Lady's Secret died suddenly in March 2003 as a result of complications from giving birth. Sadly, none of the Iron Lady's progeny came anywhere close to being as good a racehorse as Mom was.

Somewhere up in Heaven

Somewhere up in Heaven, the track is always fast
The scent of flowers fills the air, the infield lake's like glass
The sun is always shining, gentle breezes always blow
The turf is like an emerald sea for the grasses always grow.

Cappy calls the races and Pete Axthelm sets the odds.
As he saddles in the paddock, Jim Fitzsimmons smiles and nods.
The fans enjoy their time here, and many smirk and laugh
About some amusing story in the Morning Telegraph.
A hot dog costs a quarter and an ice cream costs a dime
And the bleacher seats are freebies if you survive the climb.
The grandstand seats are painted in colors bright and bold
No glass surrounds the clubhouse, for it never gets that cold.
This might be old Jamaica, or it could be Lincoln Downs
It might be Naragansett or Longacres that you've found.
It really makes no difference, it's not the name that counts
As the jockeys finish weighing and prepare to meet their mounts.

The horses are arriving, so beautiful they are
From the gray of Native Dancer to the blackness of Dark Star.
There's the tiny Northern Dancer and the majesty of Swale
And I'd swear that's Kelso staring hard at Carry Back's long tail.
There's War Admiral being feisty, and his daddy Man 'O War
And that's Citation in the paddock standing next to Alydar.
Secretariat is glowing, his coat a fiery red
And Nashua has just arrived, Mr. Woodward's at his head.
Here's Gallant Man and Fappiano, Dr. Fager and Shergar
And that new colt, Prairie Bayou, bet he wonders who they are.
There's Roberto and Nasrullah, Native Diver and Count Fleet
Walking toward them is Round Table, looking like he can't be beat.

Now the crowd turns towards the fillies, Ruffian and Go For Wand
As they walk in graceful motion while the others just look on.
Following them is Landaluce and behind them is Regret
Primonette and Cicada enter moving as a set.
Senor Luro gives a smile, and Gene Klein begins to laugh
As someone from the noisy crowd requests an autograph.
August Belmont seems to chuckle at something C.V. Whitney said
Frances Genter acts embarassed, her face turning a bright red.
The Iceman and Venezia get a leg up on their mounts
They'll win their share of races but no one ever counts.
They'll always come home safely, as they enjoy their ride
For here the fun's not winning; it's only that they've tried.

At this track, no one tires and no one is ever hurt
As they strive to do their very best, on the turf or on the dirt.
No horse here runs on Lasix, and no whips are ever used
Medication's just not needed here and no horse gets abused.
As John Loftus mounts Sir Barton, and Earl Sandy, Gallant Fox
Every fan along the apron, every owner in his box
Sees a solitary figure walking slowly towards the track
And they raise their hands to tell him to go back.
At the gate stands Jeffrey Lukas, a white bridle in his hand.
He can't figure out why he's not let in; he doesn't understand.
Then he notices the tote board, and on it is a sign.
It consists of seven words..."Go home Jeff, it's not your time."

Author unknown. Many thanks to the talented writer of this poem. As a bit of explanation, Jeff Lukas was run over by a horse (Tabasco Cat) in December of 1993. He was in a coma and almost passed away. The last several lines refer to how close he came to dying from that accident, but pulled through.

Hope your day is going great.
It's time to get ready for the
holidays and prepare for a new
year. So much to do, and then,
    that long wait for spring.

It's a cloudy, cold day here in MN today. I guess winter's creeping in.

Hello Mae! It was a tad milder here today, but I don't think it's going to last. At least today was sunny; tomorrow is supposed to be rainy and colder again. Take care always!

It never got off the ground. I decided I didn't like it after I had set it up, so I deleted everything and it's just sitting there empty. Thanks though!
